Early on in my gluten-free journey, I approached my friendly butcher and asked if he could make gluten-free wors for me. I explained the seriousness of gluten for me and was assured he could do it. Shall I go on? Or do you know how this ends?
Yes, my daughter and I were as sick as dogs. When I went back to query, my eye caught a seasoning packet in the kitchen. This particular brand of bulk seasoning contains wheat. So although the butcher didn’t make the wors with wheat flour, he didn’t realise gluten was present in the seasoning.
I have seen “gluten-free” boerewors in some supermarkets, and I assume it has been tested and certified. However there is no consistency – one store will stock it and another store will have no stock whatsoever. If you find a gluten-free wors that works for you … hang on to it!
*Hint, hint – great market opportunity for a national butcher!
