Celiac Safe South Africa

A gluten-free support resource for South Africa

Featured Product: Simba NikNaks Maize Snacks

Following on from yesterday’s post, differences in ingredients between product and website become very serious when gluten is involved.

During level 4 lockdown in June, a reader asked which flavour of NikNaks was suitable to eat. I remembered that the Fruit Chutney flavour didn’t contain any wheat, but I went to Simba’s website to check. And so the story unfolds.

I immediately sent an email (30 June) and got no reply. I then telephoned two days later on 2 July and spoke to a very polite customer care person who would escalate my query. I even received an SMS reference number that day, and another reference number on 13 August. I honestly expected a response.

It is 13 October today and I have still had no contact from Simba NikNaks. Today is my first “I don’t know” question mark for a product.

*Incidentally, the flavours “chilli cheese” and “spicy beef” have no gluten in their ingredients and are not listed on the website.
